When a subject is highly controversial.....

“When a subject is highly controversial... one cannot hope to tell the truth. One can only show how one came to hold whatever opinion one does hold. One can only give one's audience the chance of drawing their own conclusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices, the idiosyncrasies of the speaker.”-Virginia Woolf

True -what your audience takes away has so much to do with what they brought. Are they for you or against you? When I teach my Comm App kids about audience attitudes, I don't think they realize yet that they always have one.
So what made you write this?

I had a conversation with a few hashers over dinner on Friday night about a controversial issue and before I knew it the conversation went south. So I wrote this because I was reflecting on that one situation and how it could have been different.
